How to Declutter Before a Move (Without Losing Your Mind)

Moving is one of the most emotionally charged transitions we go through. And here in the Tampa Bay area — where people are relocating from across the country for our sunshine, our lifestyle, and our gorgeous neighborhoods — the energy around a move can feel equal parts exciting and completely overwhelming.
But here's what I've seen time and again with my clients: the secret to a smooth, sane move isn't just hiring the right movers. It's deciding — intentionally — what you're bringing with you into your next chapter.
That's where it all begins.

Why You Should Declutter Before a Move (Not After)
I know what you're thinking: I'll just sort through everything once I'm settled in the new place. I hear this constantly — and I understand the temptation. But moving boxes full of things you don't love or use into a brand new space means you're immediately starting your fresh start with old energy.
When you declutter before a move, you:
Pay to move only what you actually want
Unpack faster and with more intention
Step into your new home with clarity instead of chaos
Avoid recreating the same clutter patterns in a new setting
In Feng Shui, we talk about this a great deal — what you carry across a threshold, you carry energetically as well. Your new home deserves to begin clean, both physically and energetically. (Curious how energy flows through your space? Learn more about our Feng Shui Consultation services
Step 1: Give Yourself More Time Than You Think You Need
Most people underestimate how long it takes to thoughtfully sort through a home. I recommend starting the decluttering process at least 6–8 weeks before your move date — longer if you have a larger home or years' worth of accumulated belongings.
Here in Tampa Bay, a lot of my clients are downsizing from larger family homes into St. Pete condos or Clearwater beach properties. That shift in square footage means you have to make intentional decisions — there simply isn't room for everything.
Block off dedicated time each week. Don't try to do it all in one weekend. Your decisions will be better — and your stress level much lower — when you approach it in manageable phases.
Step 2: Work Room by Room (Not Category by Category)
You've probably heard the "sort by category" method. For some people, it works beautifully. But for most of my clients who are preparing for a move, I recommend a room-by-room approach instead. It's less disruptive to your daily life, and it keeps things from feeling like the house has completely imploded.
Start with the rooms you use least — guest rooms, storage spaces, the garage — and save high-traffic areas like the kitchen and master bedroom for last. This lets you build momentum and decision-making confidence before you get to the spaces that carry the most emotional weight.
As you work through each room, ask yourself three questions:
Do I love this?
Do I use this regularly?
Does this deserve to come with me into my next chapter?
If the answer to all three isn't yes, it's time to let it go.
Our Home Organization services are built around exactly this kind of intentional process — we'll help you make those decisions with clarity and without judgment.
Step 3: Create Four Zones — and Commit to Them
As you go through each space, designate four clear areas:
Keep — items you love, use, and want in your new home
Donate — items in good condition that someone else can benefit from
Sell — higher-value pieces worth the time to list or consign
Discard — anything broken, expired, or beyond use
One of the biggest mistakes I see? People create a Maybe pile. That pile never gets resolved. If you're truly uncertain about an item, ask yourself whether you'd go out and buy it again today. If the answer is no — you have your answer.
For Tampa Bay residents, there are wonderful donation options locally. Check with organizations in Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Tampa that accept furniture, clothing, and household goods to make your letting-go feel purposeful.
Step 4: Tackle Sentimental Items Last
Sentimental items — photographs, keepsakes, inherited pieces — are the hardest, and they deserve their own dedicated session, not a rushed afternoon between packing boxes.
When you sit with these items, give yourself permission to keep what genuinely brings you joy and to release the rest with gratitude. You don't need to keep every item to honor a memory or a person. Sometimes a photograph of an object is enough.
If this part of the process feels particularly heavy, that's completely normal. This is one of the most powerful aspects of our Concierge Moving Services — having a compassionate, experienced guide beside you to help you move through this with care and without overwhelm.
Step 5: Don't Buy New Organizing Products Yet
I know this sounds counterintuitive coming from a professional organizer, but please — do not buy bins and baskets before you move. You don't yet know your new space. You don't know your shelf heights, your drawer configurations, or how the natural light will change how you want to use each room.
Declutter first. Move. Then organize and style. In that order.
This is the foundation of my signature A.C.E. Method™ — Align, Clear, Elevate. We clear first, so that what we build actually fits the life you're stepping into.
