10 Things to Declutter in August Before Fall Arrives

August has a strange energy to it. Summer isn't quite over, but you can feel fall pressing in at the edges — shorter evenings, back-to-school displays in every store, that little internal nudge that says it's almost time to shift gears. Before the pace of the season picks up, this is the month to clear out what summer left behind so fall has room to actually settle in.
I do this every year myself. Right around now, I walk through my own house with a bag in hand and ask what's been quietly taking up space since June. It's rarely a big dramatic purge — it's more like a check-in. And every year, letting a few things go before September starts makes the whole transition feel so much lighter.

So here are 10 things to declutter in August — including a few I said goodbye to myself this year.
1. Sun-Faded or Worn-Out Summer Clothes
By August, you know exactly which summer pieces earned their spot in rotation and which ones sat in the drawer all season. The faded tank top, the swimsuit that lost its shape, the sandals with the sole barely hanging on — these are some of the easiest things to declutter in August because you already have your answer. If you didn't reach for it this summer, you likely won't miss it. This year I finally let go of a pair of sandals I'd been "saving" for three summers. They never once made it out of the closet.
2. Beach and Pool Gear You Didn't Use
Floats with slow leaks, half-empty bottles of sunscreen from two summers ago, goggles that don't seal anymore — beach bags and pool totes accumulate this kind of clutter fast. Go through it now, before it gets packed away for the season, and only keep what you'll actually reach for again next year. Everything else is just taking up bin space you'll want back for fall.
3. Kids' Outgrown Summer Clothes and Shoes
Before the back-to-school shopping starts, this is one of the most useful things to declutter in August. Kids grow fast over a summer, and clothes that fit in June are often snug by August. Sort through what's outgrown, donate or hand down what's still in good shape, and you'll walk into fall shopping with a much clearer picture of what's actually needed.
4. Melted, Broken, or Mismatched Crayons and Art Supplies
Summer craft projects leave a trail — broken crayons, dried-out markers, half-used glue sticks. Clearing this out in August makes room for fresh school supplies without doubling up on things that don't work anymore. It's a small task, but it's one of those things to declutter in August that instantly makes a supply drawer feel usable again.
5. Expired Sunscreen, Bug Spray, and Summer Skincare
These products have a shelf life, and by the end of summer, a lot of what's in your bathroom or beach bag is past its prime. Expired sunscreen doesn't protect the way it should, and old bug spray loses effectiveness too. Toss what's expired, and you'll actually know what you have when you reach for it again next year.
6. The "Summer Project" Pile That Never Happened
We all start summer with a project or two in mind — the craft kit, the book stack, the home project supplies bought with good intentions. If August has arrived and it's still sitting untouched, it's worth being honest with yourself about whether it's coming back to life this year. In Feng Shui, unfinished projects hold stagnant energy in a space — they represent an intention that's stalled out. I let go of a box of "someday" home decor I'd been holding onto since June — candles, vases, a few pieces I kept meaning to style somewhere and never did. The relief was immediate. If you'd like support creating systems that actually get used instead of becoming another pile, our home organization services are built around exactly that.
7. Bedding and Linens That Didn't Survive the Humidity
Florida summers are hard on linens — the humidity alone can leave sheets, throw blankets, and duvet covers feeling worn out faster than you'd expect. August is a good time to go through what's actually still soft and holding up versus what's gotten thin, stained, or musty from months of AC and humidity. Anything that's lost its shape or smell doesn't need to stick around for fall. Keep what still earns its place and let the rest go.
8. Backpacks, Lunch Boxes, and School Gear Past Their Prime
Before new school supplies come in, take stock of what's left from last year. Backpacks with broken zippers, lunch boxes that never quite got the smell out, water bottles missing their lids — these are worth clearing out now so the new school year starts with gear that actually works, instead of piling up alongside it.
9. The Junk Drawer That Collected All of Summer
Somehow, every summer leaves its mark on the junk drawer — pool passes, sunscreen samples, loose change, a rubber band ball, three sets of keys to nothing you recognize. Among all the things to declutter in August, this one is oddly satisfying. It takes fifteen minutes and instantly makes one small corner of your home feel more in control heading into a busier season.
10. Anything You've Been Meaning to Return, Donate, or Sell
That bag by the door. That stack in the trunk of your car. If it's been sitting there since June waiting for a trip to the donation center or the post office, August is the month to finally close the loop. Nothing resets your energy quite like actually finishing the task instead of just intending to.
A Quiet Reset Before the Season Picks Up
None of this needs to be a massive weekend project. The things to declutter in August are usually small, quiet decisions — a drawer here, a bag there — but together they clear the way for fall to arrive into a home that already feels lighter. I try to treat it less like a chore and more like a check-in: what did this season bring in, and what's ready to go?
If you're looking for more seasonal momentum, my May decluttering list is a great companion to this one — between the two, you've got a rhythm for clearing out clutter every time the season shifts. And if you want to make this a habit all year long, browse the full seasonal decluttering archive for more lists like this one.
If you'd like support moving through your own August reset — whether you're local to Tampa Bay or joining me virtually — I'd love to help. Our home organization services are designed to meet you exactly where you are.
Here's to a lighter, clearer home before fall arrives.
